National Program on Population and Family Planning holds a two-day workshop for Barangay Health Workers from different municipalities of Palawan, and from the City of Puerto Princesa.
The Retooling Workshop for Barangay Population Volunteers last Oct 10 and 11 at Asturias Hotel, organized by Commission on Population-Region IV-B along with National Population Program and Family Planning.
The workshop is to make BHW battle-ready in achieving zero unmet need for modern family planning methods especially among poor couples and individuals, to target 65 % contraceptive prevalence rate for modern family planning, 3 to 5 years difference before next children, educate about teen pregnancy and reduce adolescent fertility.
Provincial Social Welfare And Development Officer Abegail Ablana open the program, by saying that the role of BHW is important, and the success of achieving the issues on population relay to their hands.
“Ilang dekada na natin pinag uusapan, iniimplement ang family planning program sa ating mga communities, at kayo bilang mga volunteers sa health ay napakahalaga ng role sa implementasyon ng national planning program, kayo kasi ang isa sa mga front liners.” Ablana said.
Dr. Raul Vilanueva, the Project Manager of Popcom also deliver his speech on the second day of the workshop, he is concern to the welfare of the BHW and how they will successfully help the program.
“Dati rin po akong Provincial Health Officer ng Eastern Samar kaya alam ko po how it works sa BHW, napakahirap ng roles nyo, napaka critical, actually ang success nitong programa on population on development and family planning ay nakasalalay sa inyo,” Villanueva said.
The two days live-in workshop is facilitated by two speakers, Registered Nurse Raul Rafael and Social Worker Arnel Sam Buefano. Among the topics they discuss are the different types of family planning methods, organizing community base talks about parenthood, and effective communication skills as a health worker.
